Common video formats/codecs and transcoding discussion
Time: 11.30 - 1.00
Viewers wanting to watch video on/from the web are often faced with the problem of having to have a number of codecs installed on their machine in order to play back video. Then there is the question for producers of what to encode to, and how easy it is to use FOSS alternatives. This discussion will centre around ways to address this problem through which common formats/codecs to adopt, the possibilities of server side auto-transcoding or building a client side desktop app.

International Newsreal Discussion
MEDIA LAB: 5.00 - 7.00
There are various Indymedia inspired Newsreal in existance. A North American one, one serving Oceania and a European Newsreal. There will be people that have worked on the Oceania and European Newsreals at the transmission gathering

What have we learned from these experiences?
How can we use online distribution and contribution to serve the aims of these projects?
Is there scope for presenting the contents of these various magasines together, and within a themed website so users can search for relevant segments based on their subject matter?

Can each newsreal project help the visibility of the others?

Can we increase the quality of distribution to include an open posting DIY dvd distribution system? How realistic to host dvd quality files for collectives to download and choose their own segments to create their own DVD´s based on their knowledge of their audience? When working with subtitle files what is the best format to do this in for DVD authoring programs? Should a new network of translators be recruited from babels to help this process?
