notes from the documentation
Documentation of the event
Jaromil can maybe put together documentation of codecs and soma that is on ftp…
mick can make audio mp3 files accessible from the transmission wiki.
Holmes can format the wiki so that the workshop notes are more clearly organised. Then mick can make the audio links to each workshop’s notes, and notify the list of the fact that this is all in place, and request additions, links, clarifications to the wiki.
And or Andy can offer help with working the wiki
We need people to volunteer for particular tasks, and also to harass each other to do what they said they would do…
Ongoing discussion forum
Want Archived forum not just e-list as at present,
Proposal: add “organic groups” to the transmission site.
Holmes will ask And about that.
Drupal cms running current wiki, can make subgroups, replies to e-mails can appear on bulletin board…
Open access, deal with moderation if/when needed
Andrew can solve this easily on tech front.
User guides.
Will need commitment . Editorial work.
Use wiki books to develop training resources. Mick can take on subtitles area of wiki books. Other sections can be taken on by particular people who know about and are working on a section of documentation/training .
Tree steps, pc/mac/linux, specify appropriate skill levels for each section so people are not left feeling baffled or patronised.….
Awareness and Training network
Focus on digital distribution rather than camera training – lots of groups already doing that
Strategy
Each group should map out what training, links and press work they are doing and planning. This should be linked in with documentation… then we can think as a network about strategising training work, mutual and joint publicity etc
Need decision making tools for networked non hierarchical decision-making.. can’t really be done on an e-mail list.
Future transmission
Follow up event in october in london, focus local to uk….no funding for travel but all welcome
Create documentation for production process : Taking the notes and the outcomes from the Convergence workshop
Dvd showcase
Virtual dvd? Everyone download what they want and do a virtual dvd
DVD similar to an europena newsreel, but a editorial team is needed to contestualize the content
Make available VIDEOS OF TRAININGS… eg brasil video letters
Could make a training dvd, including documentation of trainings, and of Transmissions documentation.. showcasing successful uses of online video technology
But first maybe make an anthology of our productions on a specific theme…
To make a dvd as an exercise. Real exercise
Extending the network
Share resources as the translation pool,
Use mute civicms to list screeners, including details about their interests where appropriate so they don’t feel spammed by us all
Investigate possibilities to also use cms to list good press contacts privately and use them well…..
Expand the self-awareness and consciousness of the network….
Target for network development is effective targets….
Potential test of screeners database could be distribution of the ‘”I” the movie ’ video of argentina indymedia coming to Europe in the autumn
Joint press work to make projects sound more dynamic….
Working with artists, exchange people between beds in different cities…
Use artists: encourage them to work with our projects, help them reach and attract wider public through our portals.
Brian and witness on training
Human rights organisation where the primary objective is to strengthen work of other human rights groups.
Equip and train other ngos in use of video for advocacy
Holistic look at the case by case basis, see what are goal of ngo and then c ome up with plan to shoot and edit video… this is the material needed, these are interviews you need, here is how to create a narrative
When video done, do the outreach to United Nations or whatever that small groups can’t do.
Hammer away at distribution networks
Two tiered partnership model,
1. Core 12-15 groups a year, partnership lasts up to 3 years, all the processes above. Build capacity in area, in course of partnership ngo should also serve as resource for others in region, train the trainer
2. Seeding video advocacy , more like regional workshop less intensive, show up and try to reach as many ngos as poss in anarea. Boot camp video creation in 3-4 days. Try to create network of hr ngos using video in advocacy so they talk to each other.
Have a handbook for trainers on the witness website, video for change, handbook for video advocacy, entire framework of hr video advocacy. Pdf or book to buy. Concepts similar across areas, maybe more political activist group might have different approaches to governments…a lot of overlap . One goal is capacity building in the region, so
What are best ways to train people, don’t often work with individuals rather with people who see video as a tool in their video work. Not just make one video but a continuous process.
Witness don’t do the campaigning, don’t send people out to do the footwork, but do the media outreach, trying to place the video tools to where it needs to be, to the necessary people. Witness part of major hr networks of ngos, need to be tied into local infrastructure.. is why they work with local ngos who know local level.
No specific region but Burma, Cambodia, Papua, Bulgaria, Brasil, northern mMexico and US-Mexican border.
How Witness could collaborate, info about potential partnerships, if there’s an organisation on the ground that you can work with, sharing info and contacts on regional level. Sharing content, getting experience on a tech level….
