Subtitling and translation workshop

Titles and transcripts are different.
Let’s not talk about titles formats
Is it hard to get the transcript to start?
Yes. Once we have that, can translate and add time code

Should be norm to release timecoded transcript with film

Would like help resources for translation and titling tools.

Examples from experience, v time consuming to make frame accurate titles. Had transcripts made, added key points, and roll the transcript. Less effort than frame accuracy.

Dream media, automatically does speech to text translation. Did cost #250,000. 80-90% accurate with bbc English, 30% wrong otherwise, but at least time accurate.. could match transcript to film

U nlikely to be a tech solution, always likely to involve manual elements . Usedsubtitle workshop, translating in dvd studio pro

Indymedia has translation network? Translations.indymedia.org

Not many people able to translate so software to divide the work could be good,

Vienna group got funds to go for similar project, transformingfreedom.org, aiming to use plone, simon knows the guys.

Witness produce language in original languages, wanna translate to areas where the Issues also relevant, work little known languages eg northern thai dialogues. Would like system to spread the load. Vobsub.. web based, is it good?

Feature review of vobsub would be good, everyone talking about it but no time to look at it.
Hungarian website subtitles.hu centralised structure for Hungarian subtitles, grassroots efforts, efficient.
Automatic translation programme, good for Hollywood movies, can be easily corrected. Need English titles to start with.

Big problem of ttranslation from Korean, not often used elsewhere. Big community of voluntary translators for Hollywood movies. How to do so for our stuff?
Babels network for wsf process. Machine translation doesn’t work for English to Korean.
Subtitle issues, want sami files. Which can be attached to films to screen etc.
Korean programme called once at a time, give programme to translater.

Ok, break up process step by step.

Timecoded transcripts. Sami.file isd a text file that accompanies video file , sami file includes text and timecode. Can be .srt, .smi etc

Subtitle workshop - freeware - allows you to press play, and pauspeakingse and type the words, and you get the time codes as you go. So need to promote a culture of using miyu for mac,or subtitle workshop for pc, and create transcript with time codes from the beginning. Saves work.

.sami good because windows media can open in automatically if it has the same name as the film. Vlc allows you to choose which subtitle file you want.

Vobsub very flexible….

Ways to get the titles burnt in again for a tape version of the tape….

On pc, can open up srt file, and use virtual dub, filter called subtitle mux..?

Easy way to do it, if not worried about quality, is overlay subtitle files, then film the screen as it plays….

Idea of workflow, collaboration in translation will be talked about later this afternoon.
